Just a week after Steve Jobs announced Apple's new online storage service, iCloud; iCloud Communications, a Phoenix-based voice over IP provider have filed claims for damages and infringement since Apple copies its name and causes confusion over their competing products.
The suit was filed in a U.S District Court in Arizona, and claims that since Apple launched their iCloud offering, the public now looks at the iCloud name and sees it an an Apple product, rather than one of iCloud Communications.
iCloud Communications wants Apple to stop using the iCloud name, and requesting the Arizona district courts for profits made by Apple's iCloud so far. iCloud Communications have been in business since 2005 and despite that, not the first result you will find if you do a quick online search.
Apple did however applied for a trademark under the iCloud name in Europe on March 31. Apple also forked out $4.5 million from Swedish company Xcerion for the iCloud.com domain who was using it for Linkoping, a cloud-based data storage service.
Apple does have a history of launching products that already have established names, only to reach an agreement after the product launch. Apple was also hit with a lawsuit with Cisco over the iPhone name, but eventually settled it out of court; and the iPad name was owned by Fujitsu. Most famously, the name of the Beatles record label was Apple Corp, but the computer version of Apple and the Beatles version of Apple worked it out.

Oh Apple, when will you learn.
weren't apple famous for their i[...] names? what's the difference with iCloud? Sure, they should have paid the company, but w/e.
So this just goes to show that you can do whatever the hell you want if you've got the moola.
quite good news!
Microsoft is the best.
More proof that Apple is always "innovating"
Argh, I hate him!
i hear he works for only a 1 a year? and how much free cocaine ???haw haw haw
Steve looks so fat in that photo. And this is probably the best thing to ever happen to that icloud company. They will probably make more money from this lawsuit than they have the past 6 years.
HA. What a shame.
Oh Apple. You guys need to understand that you can't put a lower case "i" before stuff and call it a new invention.
I do not like Apple as a company.
Every major corporation/company gets sued these days
This is kinda dumb, with apple claiming to be as innovative and smart as much as they do, you would think they would be smart enough to look up names before using them, but I guess when you have enough money you stop caring about other people.
Apple has enough money to win any fight in my opinion.
awesome read, even though i hate apple, nice blog by the way
iCloud?
I like apple but they seem to be gonig nuts with that "i"
I want an ICloud, sounds cool
Serves apple right...
i lost a lot of respect for jobs because of this story
Yeah well thats Apple for you lol =P
Good infooo
Every week another reason for not buying an apple product. :D
this is why you don't obsess over everything being a certain way Ithis Ithat APPLE APPLE APPLE
it's cute but squatters and the like will undoubtedly make you pay for it
don't think Jobs is in any trouble of going bankrupt tho
Apple doesn't care...another reason I hate their business tactics.
I think that apple is becoming a poor ripoff over the time just putting new prices on things :/
I use a lot of Apple products; iPhone 4, iPod Touch, iMac... and I've been extremely happy with them. As long as they keep making high quality goods, and providing good customer service I'll continue to purchase their products.
I don't like Apple but this is going to happen with technology.
funny how they make all these complex devices but can't get a proper unique name for it.
I wish that small company luck. Apple can stall basically forever and just keep paying legal fees.
Aww poor them.. like they can't afford it!
Apple gonna lawyer up fast and squash this lawsuit.
nothing will come up from this, apple is too big and too smart
Given the amount of power and money apple has, they'll probably end up keeping the name.
LOL@ DIY.
