It's official, the internet video chat service Skype is now officially a part of Microsoft.
The two companies joined forces this week after Microsoft Corp. completed its $8.5 billion purchase of Skype. The closing came five months after Microsoft announced the acquisition.
Skype features includes video calling, video conferencing, voice over ip calling and also conference calling.
In a press release sent out Friday morning, Microsoft confirmed that the deal, and revealed that Skype CEO Tony Bates will now report directly to Steve Ballmer in his new role as president of the new Skype Division of Microsoft. Skype employees will continue to be located around the world as before.
Microsoft is counting on Skype to help it catch up in some the hottest markets in technology and media. Those areas include online socializing, mobile phones and digital video.
Skype's roughly 170 million users made 207 billion minutes of voice and video calls last year — almost 400,000 years' worth.

Wow, go MS...Too bad I never use skype :P
now it's time for more people to start using skype :)
This is going to be a big money making acquisition.
I think skype is going to go bankrupt in a few years and Microsoft will be sad.
Microsoft is playing against Google buying up so many web companies
Hopefully this merger will be good for the users of skype, not like that acitvision/blizzard merge!
I can't believe that Skype was bought for that much money. That's ridiculous.
I don't like the sound of that...
Microsoft just buys up everything.
